Sinus lift

What is Sinus lift?

To be able to place dental implants in substitution of lost upper teeth, we need a minimum of bone in both vertical (height) and horizontal (width). Sinus lift is a surgical technique that is used in those cases in which there is not enough bone to place the implants in the maxilla.

What can cause a decrease in bone in the maxilla?

The loss of the teeth of the upper jaw will eventually cause:

  • The reabsorption of the bone in width and height, that is, the patient experiences a loss of bone.
  • In addition, the maxillary sinus, which is a structure above the posterior molars, begins to pneumatize (grows and occupies more space), which limits the space of the bone.

Benefits of Sinus lift:

It allows to place dental implants in patients with little bone.
It avoids that you have to take prosthesis of “removes and pon”. Before this technique was performed in patients with little bone, the only solution was to carry removable non-fixed prostheses because the dental implants could not be placed
Avoid having to place zygomatic implants, a technique that is more complex surgically.

Why perform the Sinus Lift treatment at Abaden Dentistas?

  1. Clinical Session: We perform a joint diagnosis involving doctors, dentists of various specialties and prosthetics. The benefit is that the patient is being treated by professionals who have 28 years of shared experiences to their credit.
  2. Dental Sedation: We have a team of doctors anesthetists fixed, this allows us to offer our patients the sedation service every day of the week. Thanks to dental sedation, the patient will be asleep while the entire procedure is being performed.
  3. Experience and training: The team of surgeons who perform this type of intervention are specialists who hold a Master’s degree in Periodontal Surgery and Implants and who have extensive experience in performing this type of surgery.

1. Case study and CBCT
To assess whether sinus lift can be done, it is essential to perform a 3-dimensional scan (CBCT) of the maxilla. This diagnostic test informs us of the width, height and quality of the bone. In addition, with the CBCT we can see how the maxillary sinus is and allows us to plan the surgery previously in a computer.
2. Sinus lift surgery
The lifting surgery consists of "elevating" the maxillary sinus by means of some instruments and placing a material of bone filling that is going to be integrated and will create new bone so that we can place the dental implants. This surgery does not cause any type of pain since it is performed under anesthesia and, if the patient requests it, under dental sedation.
3. Placement of dental implants
In some cases, the same day that the sinus lift surgery is performed, the implants can also be placed. In other cases, you should wait 3 to 4 months for the new bone inserted to integrate correctly. Your Abaden dentist will decide what your case is.
4. Review
It is very important, not only in sinus lift but in all dental treatments, that you follow the advice of your dentist and go to the revisions to see the evolution and control that everything works correctly.

In what cases is sinus lift recommended?

It is indicated in patients who have lost the teeth of the upper jaw and have lost a lot of bone and, without this technique, the dental implants could not be placed.

Is the treatment of sinus lift painful?

It is not painful since the area that is going to be treated with local anesthesia is going to sleep. In addition, we recommend that this surgery be performed under dental sedation provided by our team of anesthetists, for greater patient comfort.

How long should I wait to get my dental implants after my sinus lift?

It depends to a large extent on the amount and quality of bone that has been placed. In some cases, implants are placed in the same surgery. In other cases, you should wait between 3 and 4 months until the new bone is integrated. Consult your Abaden dentist to find out what your case is.

Will I be able to live a normal life after the operation? Eat and drink?

Yes, your doctor will prescribe the medication so that you do not have pain after the operation and it will indicate what kind of food you can eat and drink. In general, it is recommended not to drink very hot drinks or very hard foods.
