What are connective tissue grafts

The name may cause some fear but it is a minimally invasive and very simple procedure.

It consists of taking a piece of gum from an area of the mouth where it abounds and placing it in an area where it is needed, either to cover a tooth, to place implants or other reasons

 Benefits of connective tissue grafts:

  • They replace the lost gums and allow to place dental implants improving their results.
  • By covering teeth and implants, they protect them from bacteria and food debris, among others.
  • They cover dental roots that have been exposed to periodontal disease.

Why perform the connective tissue graft treatment at Abaden Dentistas?

  1. Clinical Session: We perform a joint diagnosis involving doctors, dentists of various specialties and prosthetics. The benefit is that the patient is being treated by professionals who have 28 years of shared experiences to their credit.
  2. Dental Sedation: We have a team of doctors anesthetists fixed, this allows us to offer our patients the sedation service every day of the week. Thanks to dental sedation, the patient will be asleep while the entire procedure is being performed.
  3. Experience and training: The team of surgeons who perform this type of intervention are specialists who hold a Master’s degree in Periodontal Surgery and Implants and who have extensive experience in performing this type of surgery.

Procedure

1. Case study
The team of Abaden dentists works together analyzing your case in clinical session to decide if it is necessary to perform a connective tissue graft and from which area of the mouth to remove it.
2. Surgery
The surgery is simple and minimally invasive. It consists of taking a piece of gum from another area of the mouth where there is excess and place it in the area that is needed. Points are placed to close the wound and protect the area.
3. Definitive treatment
Once the graft has been correctly adapted in the placed area, it is possible to proceed to carry out the treatment that was planned, for example to place dental implants. In some cases, treatment is prior to graft placement.
4. Reviews
It is very important, not only in the connective tissue grafts but in all dental treatments, that you go to the revisions to see the evolution and control that everything works correctly.

FAQ's

In what cases is a connective tissue graft recommended?

The reasons for performing a connective tissue graft are several. The most usual is when you have very little gum in any area where you want to place implants.

The gum is essential for the implants to work properly. Another reason may be, for example, to cover a root that has been discovered by a dental recession and protect it. This happens when the gum has gone down and the root is seen.

Is the operation painful?

No, since the dentist places local anesthesia to "sleep" the area where the surgery will be performed. In addition, in Abaden dentists we know that these procedures can give fear or apprehension so we offer the possibility of doing the surgery under dental sedation. During sedation, the sensation is pleasant and you do not suffer pain or anxiety. Ask your Abaden dentist about this option.

Is the gum going to hurt after the operation?

Not at the beginning. You can have small discomforts that will disappear after a couple of days. However, it is normal for you to notice a strange sensation when touching the points with the tongue. Do not worry, this feeling will not cause you pain.
